Peoria is stepping up its public safety game with the launch of its very own Aviation Unit. Locals can witness the inauguration of this new addition to the city's emergency services at a ribbon-cutting event scheduled for August 20. The early morning ceremony, kicking off at 7:30 A.M., will take place at Centennial Plaza Amphitheater, right behind a City Hall that's got its makeover happening, with a new roof on the way.
The city's officials, including Mayor Jason Beck, Police Chief Thomas Intrieri, and Assistant Fire-Medical Chief Justin Gorospe, are set to deliver remarks at this landmark event, according to a statement obtained by the City of Peoria's news site. With Peoria on a fast growth track, the new Aviation Unit is a strategic move to provide first responders with the resources necessary to adequately cover an area sprawling over 233 square miles.
Recognizing the necessity of these resources, the Peoria City Council tagged the development of the Aviation Unit as a Strategic Priority. In a move that showcases his commitment to the city's safety, Mayor Beck tapped into state coffers, securing a $3.5 million grant via Arizona State Senate Bill 1702, effectively putting a Bell 505 helicopter on the city's tab—a significant leap in enhancing the capabilities of local law enforcement and emergency services. "The Aviation Unit will grow over phases and is expected to be fully deployed by October 2025 and will also be available for use by surrounding West Valley cities upon request," stated the City of Peoria's announcement.
This Bell 505 helicopter will undoubtedly elevate Peoria's game in terms of law enforcement reach, search and rescue, firefighting, and all those essentials that keep a city's pulse steady and strong. The City Council approved the aviation purchase back in December 2023, with the specific aim of bolstering the fire and police departments against the challenges posed by the area's vast geography.
