A tragedy unfolded Saturday morning in Pflugerville when a child died after what officials believe was a drowning incident at an apartment complex pool. As reported by KVUE, the Pflugerville Police Department responded to a call just before 8:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of S Heatherwilde Blvd.
Upon arrival, officers found a Good Samaritan performing life-saving measures on the child. Police took over the rescue efforts until EMS and the Pflugerville Fire Department arrived. Despite the efforts, the child was pronounced deceased after being transported to the hospital.
Further highlighting this ongoing issue, KXAN detailed statistics from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, emphasizing the grim reality that so far this year, there have been 72 child deaths related to drowning in the state. The department reminds us that "Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for kids under the age of five and toddlers are especially at risk," noting the danger that water presents to the youngest among us.
As summer continues, authorities and advocacy groups urge guardians to keep vigilant when their children are near swimming areas, indoors and out.
