Whitmore Village residents are set to see construction crews back in action as the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation kicks off Phase 2 of the Whitmore Avenue Sidewalk Improvements project. Commuters along Whitmore Avenue should prepare for a bit of disruption—the project, starting the first week of September, will extend the accessible path initiated by Phase 1 to the eastern end of ʻIhiʻihi Avenue, further enhancing pedestrian access in the area, according to the State of Hawaii press release.
According to an announcement from the State of Hawaii , the work is scheduled to unfold on weekdays, with activity ramping up between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., presumably to avoid to seriously impact rush hour traffic. However, residents should brace for a single-lane and shoulder closure on the north side of Whitmore Avenue. Pedestrian detours will be provided, helping locals navigate around the construction as it plows forward.
The first phase of improvements wrapped up last year, leaving the north side of Whitmore Avenue between Uakanikoʻo Street and the west end of ʻIhiʻihi Avenue sporting new sidewalks. This next phase promises to fill in the gaps, literally paving the way for a more walkable, bike-friendly neighborhood. The expected completion window stretches out to September 2025, painting a long-term picture of roadway construction for local commuters and pedestrians.
While traffic adjustments are never pleasant, Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is dangling the carrot of improved multimodal infrastructure for the Whitmore Village community. This $3.03 million project aims to better connect residents to local schools, transit, businesses, and the community center. "HDOT appreciates the patience of the Whitmore Village community as we work to improve the multimodal infrastructure connecting the neighborhood to area schools, transit, businesses and the community center," the department said in a statement, as reported by the State of Hawaii. It seems the community can expect to watch, and navigate around, the transformation unfold over the course of the next year.
