Philly drivers and parkers note: the Department of Streets is kicking off a round of street resurfacing starting the week of August 19, and it will affect your daily commute. Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi announced that various streets throughout Philadelphia will undergo temporary closures and will be rife with parking restrictions to make way for the resurfacing work, as reported by Philadelphia's official website. This construction effort is anticipated to take us right through the end of August, with daytime operations being the focus for crews on the job.
This extensive project will unfold in three distinct phases across the 1st and 2nd Highway Bid#3962_G2023-00621, with expectations set for separate time frames for each segment of work. Initially, streets will undergo milling, a process that's slated to take about five days per corridor. Then attention will turn to the manhole covers and utility boxes, which will be adjusted and reset; this stage is expected to last two to three days per corridor. The final phase, paving, should also span around three to five days per corridor—weather permitting, as per the information provided by the Department of Streets.
Residents won't be escaping the daytime hustle of construction either. As per the City of Philadelphia, all work is scheduled from 7 AM to 4 PM, which means your usual routes might be cordoned off for the resurfacing efforts. Although roads will technically remain open, you'll likely encounter flagging operations directing traffic. The inevitable "No Parking" signs will be going up too, so car owners better keep their eyes peeled or risk needing to contact the local Police District to track down their towed vehicle—a hassle nobody wants.
