Major bridge repairs are scheduled to impact your commute on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) this weekend and into next week. PennDOT is leading a $100.6 million overhaul of the Wayne Junction Viaduct. The goal is to create a more reliable bridge spanning the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown area. However, this necessary construction will make getting around more challenging, as per the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Starting at 8:00 PM on Friday until 5:00 AM on Monday, August 19, both northbound and southbound lanes will experience periodic closures. Additionally, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound I-76 will be closed, requiring motorists to detour via Montgomery Drive before returning to I-76 westbound. Nighttime and early morning closures will also occur from 8:00 PM to 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM, affecting various stretches of the expressway through Thursday, August 22.
Motorists should expect significant congestion and delays, and PennDOT advises adding extra time to travel plans. While the timing is inconvenient, these disruptions are necessary for future smoother journeys. However, all scheduled maintenance depends on weather conditions, as adverse weather could delay progress.
