In an intriguing blend of law enforcement and canine prowess, a dirt bike rider, who attempted to evade police on Spanaway Loop Rd. on June 30th, was apprehended thanks in part to the nose of K9 Eddie. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department detailed the incident in a blog post published on July 30th. A deputy spotted the dirt bike rider driving without a helmet and initiated a traffic stop. The rider, however, decided to flee, leading to a brief pursuit that the deputy chose to terminate for safety reasons.
The saga did not end with the typical image of a suspect speeding into the horizon. This rider's escape plan went awry when he dropped his bike upon rounding a corner. At this point, the containment strategy was put into play, and Deputy K9 Eddie was called to the scene. According to the department's blotter, "Eddie got right to work and started tracking to a nearby backyard." Eddie's tenacity was on display as he refused to be outfoxed in his mission.
The deputies initially came up empty when they inspected a shed in their search for the fugitive. Yet, Eddie retraced his steps back to the dirt bike and onto the scent of the suspect's hiding spot. In a twist that could be likened to an act of serendipity, Eddie discovered the suspect not back in the initial shed, but in a nearby porch area, proving that the canine's resolve matched the adage—dogs seldom lose their day. Once located, the suspect was arrested without resistance and faces several charges, including Felony Eluding and Obstruction.
The suspect, perhaps unaware of new enforcement policies or the sagacity of a K9's commitment, now faces more than just a slap on the wrist. The suspect also had a history of infractions, as deputies reported that he was arrested for Driving While Suspended in the 1st Degree and had several Suspended driving warrants as well.
