Port Charlotte witnessed an unexpected event when, shortly after 8:30 p.m. yesterday, an SUV crashed into the façade of Sweet's Diner, located at 2300 Tamiami Trail. According to WFTX Digital Team's report, the vehicle hopped the curb before coming to a stop completely inside the restaurant. Remarkably, Charlotte County Sheriff's Office confirmed that due to the diner being closed at the time of the incident, there were no injuries reported.
Newton Street Art Barn's coverage explains that Charlotte County Public Safety and Squad 12 were dispatched to the scene to reinforce the compromised structure. In the wake of the crash, a county building inspector was summoned to assess the extent of the damage sustained by the building, as explained by Charlotte County Public Safety in their Facebook post.
Adding a more personal perspective to the event, Scott Sweet, the owner of Sweet's Diner, shared with WINK News the sequence of events leading up to the crash. "The cop called me and said that the building had been hit by somebody and to come down here," said Sweet. He further detailed that the driver was inexperienced and confused the vehicle's gears, accidentally propelling it forward into his establishment.
