Drivers in Clarksville, Tennessee, are navigating new territory as the city unveils its first major roundabout at Whitfield Road and Needmore Road. The roundabout, which locals have humorously named "Rhonda the Roundabout," is creating a buzz in the community and has garnered a following online. A dedicated Facebook page has swiftly amassed more than 7,000 followers, and a themed song has been released on YouTube. "Rhonda" also pops up as a location on Google Maps, as reported by WKRN.
The novelty of Rhonda has led some drivers to competitively make laps around the traffic circle, with the top "high scores" being tracked on social media. This unintended roundabout use might even quickly become a source of local folklore. However, the new traffic feature has not been without its share of problems. Some community members have raised concerns about the roundabout's design and signage. "During rush hour, you're parked in the roundabout already," Clarksville residents Cashea and Ty Smart said, as per WKRN. "Someone's going to fly through — not looking."
In response to these concerns, city officials are considering changes. "We're thinking about changing even these temporary markings to mimic the sign," David Smith, director of the Clarksville Street Department, said, per WKRN. He also mentioned plans to alleviate congestion, ensuring drivers won't sit in traffic for extended periods. Meanwhile, the performance of the roundabout is being closely monitored as its success could influence the construction of similar traffic features citywide.
A few instances of driver confusion have also been caught on camera, with one live stream capturing a car turning left into oncoming traffic. Despite these hiccups, Chris Smith, Editor-in-Chief for ClarksvilleNow.com, noted that "a vast majority of local drivers know exactly what to do when they get to the roundabout", as detailed in a piece by News Channel 5.
