Cambridge was rocked by a violent altercation on Memorial Drive near the MIT Sailing Pavilion last night, resulting in shots fired and two individuals hospitalized. State and local police descended upon the scene just after 5 p.m., cordoning off the area where two damaged vehicles became the focal points of an intense investigation, as reported by CBS Boston.
The conflict, which erupted into violence on what is otherwise a serene stretch along the Charles River, was confirmed by State Police to be an unforeseen incident of road rage between two men unknown to each other prior—65-year-old Cesar Gutierrez of Revere and 30-year-old Kevin Osorio from Boston, according to NBC Boston. In a twisted development of events involving a blunt object and a licensed firearm, the confrontation escalated beyond mere angry words and aggressive maneuvers.
Authorities detailed that Osorio, following a physical attack by Gutierrez with an unspecified blunt object, drew his licensed firearm and discharged several rounds at Gutierrez. The scuffle and subsequent gunfire left both parties with serious injuries and necessitated their transport to Massachusetts General Hospital, where they remain under medical care. Both men are facing charges in connection to the incident, and arraignments await them at Cambridge District Court when medically possible, as noted by WCVB.
Despite the alarming events, the Massachusetts State Police reassured the public that there is currently no ongoing threat to community safety. Amid the usual city bustle, a section of Memorial Drive was briefly closed to restore order from the disruption caused by the incident, as shown in witness videos shared with media outlets. Police forces, including Cambridge and MIT police, were present at the scene, addressing the situation that disrupted Memorial Drive's typical Sunday calm.
