A Rochester man, previously released early from prison, has been handed a significant sentence for trafficking methamphetamine. Panh Thavong, 51, will now face 20 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release for his role in a drug distribution conspiracy. This sentence was handed down on August 23, by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Tostrud, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Minnesota.

As detailed by court documents, Thavong's involvement in the drug trade began to rapidly re-escalate in July 2022, shortly after his early release. His operations largely centered around the greater Rochester area, where he was found to have been conspiring to distribute the narcotic. The investigation which to span over several months, led to the identification of multiple locations including stash houses and rental units, as well as vehicles used by Thavong and his conspirators to facilitate their operation.

On December 9, 2022, law enforcement officers executed search warrants on the identified locations and vehicles, uncovering more than 34 kilograms of methamphetamine. This included 3.5 kilograms from one stash house, 4.5 kilograms from a rental unit, and a considerable 26 kilograms from a conspiracy vehicle. In a plea of guilt entered on July 20, 2023, Thavong admitted to the intention of distributing the seized substances, as reported by the Justice Department.
