The Rockwall High School wrestling community has been shaken by recent allegations of athlete mistreatment leading to serious injury. Coach Josh Brining has been placed on administrative leave during an investigation into a practice incident that left a student-athlete with a damaged shoulder. Gavin Gross, a 17-year-old junior at the school, suffered a traumatic injury that required surgery and will keep him sidelined for an extensive period.

According to FOX 4 News, Gross claimed that during a practice session, he was matched with a potential recruit who performed a surprise move, resulting in Gross's shoulder dislocation. The recruit was allegedly brought in by Brining himself. In a follow-up injury, reportedly exacerbated during a tournament the next day, medical records revealed a labral tear and a fracture in Gross's shoulder. "It’s a big obstacle in my way," Gross said, as per FOX 4 News, expressing his frustration and concern over the impact of the injury on his athletic future.

Further deepening the controversy, The Dallas Morning News reports that Tabatha Gross, Gavin's mother, filed a complaint alleging not only the injury but also possible recruiting violations. She claimed her son was pressured to compete while injured, accusing Brining of failing to provide prompt medical attention and minimizing the severity of the injury. Gavin Gross was also quoted saying the coach forcibly popped his shoulder back into place without permission, leading to further damage.

Rockwall ISD has notified the Gross family about the investigation but has not disseminated information about the investigation to other parents. "Gavin is scared of him. He doesn’t trust him," Tabatha Gross said, per The Dallas Morning News. "If he has hurt somebody else and these kids just don’t have the courage to talk or they are scared they are going to lose their position ... I want them to warn these parents, and they just won't do that." The district confirmed that Brining is on administrative leave and that they are investigating the concerns raised, prioritizing student safety.

This incident is not an isolated one within the district. A year prior, Rockwall-Heath’s football program made headlines after several students were hospitalized with a muscle disorder following an intense workout. The ensuing investigation led to the resignation of head coach John Harrell. As the Rockwall ISD community awaits the outcome of the current investigation, concerns about the welfare of student-athletes and the accountability of their coaches remain at the forefront of discussions among parents and the wider school community.
