An 18-year-old man is dead after being shot inside a home in the 1300 block of Sequoia Court in DeSoto yesterday afternoon, and police have detained another 18-year-old they believe was the shooter. Officers say the two were not related, and investigators are still trying to determine what led to the single gunshot that killed the victim inside the residence at around 4:30 p.m.
According to the DeSoto Police Department, a witness called 911 to report that someone inside the home had been shot. Officers who responded located several individuals inside the residence and found the victim suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Officers provided first aid before DeSoto Fire Rescue personnel transported him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Suspect Detained, Identities Withheld
Police detained the 18-year-old male believed to be the shooter at the scene, per the department's statement, but had not publicly released his name or the victim's identity as of Sunday evening. As WFAA reported, that delay reflects the standard police practice of withholding names until next-of-kin notifications are complete. DeSoto police said they withheld additional details for the same reason and noted the investigation is ongoing.
The department, in its statement authored by Patrol Captain G. Kirkland, described the shooting as an isolated incident that poses no immediate threat to the public. Police said they will release additional information as it becomes available and asked anyone with information to call (469) 658-3050.
A Second Deadly Shooting for DeSoto This Year
Sunday's shooting is not the first fatal gun violence DeSoto has grappled with in 2026. In April, DeSoto police investigated a separate fatal shooting in the 900 block of North Hampton Road outside a local restaurant that left 20-year-old Kyeler Hunter dead and multiple other people injured, according to CBS News. That earlier case unfolded in a business parking lot and involved multiple victims, a contrast to Sunday's shooting, which occurred inside a private residence roughly a mile from DeSoto Independent School District facilities in the Sequoia Court neighborhood.
The DeSoto Police Department is headquartered at 714 East Belt Line Road and is led by Chief Joseph Costa, who previously served with the Massachusetts State Police and the Dallas County Sheriff's Department, according to the City of DeSoto. The department has used ShotSpotter acoustic gunshot detection technology since early 2023 to help officers rapidly locate firearm discharges within city limits.
What Comes Next Legally
Whether prosecutors ultimately pursue murder or manslaughter charges will hinge on what investigators determine about intent. Under Texas Penal Code Section 19.02, murder is generally a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison, applicable when someone intentionally or knowingly causes a death or causes death while committing an act clearly dangerous to human life, according to Texas criminal law resources. If investigators instead find the shooting resulted from reckless conduct rather than intent, Texas Penal Code Section 19.04 classifies that as manslaughter, a second-degree felony carrying two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, per legal analysis from Saputo Toufexis.
DeSoto, home to an estimated 56,211 residents with a median household income of $82,782, sits about 15 miles south of downtown Dallas as part of the Best Southwest regional alliance with Cedar Hill, Duncanville, and Lancaster. The suburban Dallas County city has a homeownership rate near 70 percent, according to Texas Demographics. Hoodline previously covered a separate DeSoto case in which an officer fatally shot an armed suspect in September 2024, though that incident is unrelated to Sunday's shooting. No further details on a motive or possible charges have been released as the investigation into Sunday's death continues.
