Early Sunday morning in DeSoto ended grimly with the fatal shooting of a male suspect by a local police officer. DeSoto Police reported they responded to a call at approximately 4:00 AM on the 1100 block of Greenbriar Drive. An armed Hispanic male suspect was reported knocking on doors and wandering through front and backyards, accompanied by two women and carrying a small child.
Upon their arrival, officers found themselves confronting the armed suspect holding the child and faced threats of violence, with the man stating he would shoot any approaching officer. Attempting to de-escalate the tension, the police engaged the suspect in dialogue, however, the group subsequently ran off into a nearby creek, evading the officers' sight. After setting up a perimeter, police located the individuals roughly half an hour later on the 1200 block of Springbrook Drive. According to the DeSoto Police Department, the suspect still clutched the firearm, refusing to cooperate.
In a critical moment, the officers, fearing for the child's and their safety, made the call to shoot. The officer, equipped with a rifle, fired at the suspect, who was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by DeSoto Medical Personnel. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, as police are still conducting investigations to determine it. The two women present during the incident were taken in for questioning, but could not assist the police in identifying the man.
The child was safely extricated from the situation and has been returned to their family. As is the procedure following such incidents, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. The Grand Prairie Police and the Public Integrity Unit of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office are both reviewing the case to ensure a thorough and unbiased examination of the officer-involved shooting, to maintain public trust and accountability within the law enforcement processes.
