Chicago communities are again reckoning with the impact of recent smash-and-grab burglaries. Early Sunday morning, a Rogers Park ice cream shop in the 6600 block of North Clark Street experienced a break-in. According to ABC7, a man shattered the glass door, stealing cash and merchandise around 1:30 a.m. In a surveillance video, he was seen throwing an object through the glass, hopping over the counter, and forcibly opening the cash register to take more than $500.

This incident is part of a distressing pattern. The West Loop area has also been targeted between July 9 and July 13, seeing a series of similar crimes. WGN-TV reported that a group of three to five people, thought to be involved in the burglaries, used a sledgehammer to smash through storefronts to quickly steal electronics and clothing. They were consistently described as wearing dark clothing and masks.

The ice cream shop owner, wishing to remain anonymous, expressed his anguish to ABC7, saying, "It's sad. It's very sad," the owner said. "People is working hard, you know?" Despite the break-in, the business continued to serve customers later that day, albeit through a damaged entrance. The owner has vowed to remain open during the repairs, not allowing this event to shutter the parlor he has run for four years.
