Officer Chandler of the Roswell Police Department engaged in a deliberate collision to bring to a halt a vehicle barreling in the wrong direction along GA 400. The incident took place around 3 a.m. on August 4, after Roswell E911 received several reports concerning the errant driver, as FOX 5 Atlanta detailed.
With the threat of an impending calamity looming over the pre-dawn peace, Officer Chandler, in a decision to quickly intervene, positioned his cruiser to serve as an impregnable barricade on the motorway. His move effectively brought the high-speed chase to a resolute though jarring end. The subsequent collision disarmed both vehicles, sparing other motorists from a potentially disastrous encounter. "An officer then 'positioned his patrol car without hesitation directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle,'" the department expressed in a statement obtained by Atlanta News First.
Both individuals involved, Officer Chandler and the driver—later identified as 34-year-old Eris Zuniga-Gayatan—suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. This outcome stands in stark relief to the potentially grave alternative had the wayward vehicle continued unimpeded on its northbound trajectory in the southbound lanes.
Zuniga-Gayatan now faces multiple charges in the wake of the incident, including DUI, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, reckless driving, driving without a license, and interference with government property. The prompt and decisive actions of Officer Chandler drew commendation from the department, who heralded his conduct as "exemplary" and reflective of the caliber expected of Roswell's finest. "(The officer's) bravery is exemplary, and representative of the men and women who daily work to protect and serve the Roswell community," a statement said, as reported by Atlanta News First. The Georgia State Patrol took on the investigation of the unsettling pre-dawn encounter.
