Following a harrowing trial, Shalesh Kumar was convicted by a jury on 87 counts linked to the sexual assault of a minor. The verdict, delivered on August 22, found Kumar guilty of not only engaging in unlawful sexual acts with a 16-year-old but also of additional lewd acts upon a child age 14 or 15. Moreover, he faces consequences for the possession of child pornography. The Sacramento District Attorney's Office, represented by Deputy District Attorney Katherine Martin, disclosed that the jury found the victim was particularly vulnerable and that Kumar had abused a position of trust, amidst a backdrop of calculated and sophisticated planning in his crimes. Kumar now confronts a possible maximum sentence of 61 years in state prison.
The case, which gained significant attention, outlines a sinister form of predation rooted in manipulation and deceit. In 2020, 38-year-old Kumar commenced what would become a disturbing series of messages to a 15-year-old victim on social media. The victim, struggling with family issues, was tragically ensnared by Kumar's deceiving offer of help. Despite knowledge of her age, Kumar methodically groomed her, leading the girl to believe she was in love. After a family member discovered their illicit sexual relationship and intervened, Kumar persisted to covertly remain in contact with the victim— even after she was placed under foster care. In April 2021, Kumar audaciously picked up the victim from her foster home and brought her to his house, where he resumed sexual relations and essentially held her captive, as noted in a statement obtained by the Sacramento District Attorney's Office.
Kumar’s manipulation extended beyond the abuse itself to actively hiding the victim from authorities. His endeavors to conceal her included falsifying an identity, substantiated by the procurement of a fake ID, and imprisoning the victim in his house, under the guise of supposed protection. During the multiple instances when police and Child Protective Services visited Kumar's residence, he blatantly lied, professing ignorance about the victim's whereabouts. The breaking point arrived in October 2022, when Kumar physically assaulted the victim—which propelled her to escape and seek police assistance.
Evidence retrieved from Kumar's mobile phone was damning; videos and texts not only highlighted the ongoing sexual abuse but also his awareness of the minor's age and his efforts to keep her hidden from law enforcement. The Sacramento District Attorney's Office shared this critical evidence, leading to the jury’s decision. Kumar now awaits sentencing on October 4, where the Honorable Steve White will determine the extent of his incarceration for his actions that have indelibly marked the life of a young victim.
