Outdoor enthusiasts will need to find an alternate path as sections of the Salado Creek Greenway in San Antonio are set for intermittent closures through mid-August for a necessary clean-up operation. In the aftermath of a garbage truck accident that left debris scattered along the trail, the city is taking measures to ensure the green spaces surrounding Walker Ranch, McAllister Park, and near mile marker 925 return to a state of normalcy and safety for the public. A statement from the city's Parks and Recreation spokeswoman, Connie Swann, indicated the timelines for these temporary trail shutdowns, reported the San Antonio Report.
The incident occurred on July 25 when a City of San Antonio garbage truck driver attempted a right turn from the U.S. Highway 281 access road onto Wurzbach Parkway and collided with a cement wall initiating a series of unfortunate events that ended with the vehicle tipping over the edge onto the greenway below.
While the driver was critically injured, albeit in stable condition after the extraction from the wreckage, the authorities ensured the safety of the public by initiating the clean-up. “The complainant was extracted out of the garbage truck and sustained serious bodily injury. The complainant was transported to a local hospital in critical, but stable condition,” San Antonio Police Department Spokesman Ricardo Guzman detailed in a somber recap of the ordeal.
The event has spurred an ongoing investigation by the San Antonio Police Department, with the current standing indicating no pending charges as of the latest updates. More details on the closures and the status of the trail are available through the city's official communication channels, according to the San Antonio Report.
