San Antonio residents face a new directive regarding their recycling habits. Effective yesterday, residents must refrain from placing single-use plastic bags in the blue recycling carts. This decision, driven by operational challenges, aligns San Antonio with other major cities where such policies are already in place. As per the San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD), these items often cause equipment malfunctions and complicate the recycling process due to their tendency to entangle with other materials.
Josephine Valencia, SWMD Deputy Director, emphasized the scope of this operational shift. "The decision to stop accepting plastic bags in the blue recycling cart is not unique to San Antonio," she mentions in a statement obtained by FOX San Antonio. Valencia further clarified that none of the nation’s other ten largest cities are accepting plastic bags in their recycling programs. The change purportedly affects around 370,000 customers in San Antonio, highlighting the broader industry trend where private hauling companies have not included plastic bags in their recycling programs.
As an alternative, many retailers provide drop-off kiosks for the recycling of plastic bags, where they can be processed separately and thus more efficiently. The SWMD urges the community to take advantage of these facilities or to adopt reusable bags to minimize impact. If recycling is not an option, residents are advised to place plastic bags in the brown trash cart for disposal. More information about this shift and updated guidelines can be found on the city’s official website as indicated by the SWMD's efforts to revamp informational materials to reflect the new policy.
While the veto on plastic bags in blue carts may prompt a significant adjustment for San Antonians, it underpins a deliberate move to bolster the efficiency of the city’s recycling system. Such interventions are necessary stepping stones in pursuit of more sustainable waste management practices, as tangled plastic bags have been a persistent problem in the recycling stream, leading to costly delays and downtime in facilitating recycling facilities. The more isolated collection of plastic bags via designated kiosks represent a targeted solution to this issue. "The change affects our 370,000 customers, but it is important to note that the city’s private hauling companies that collect from the remaining 2,081,000 population and commercial businesses have never accepted plastic bags in their recycling programs," Valencia told FOX San Antonio.
