The San Antonio community is reeling after a series of disturbing incidents over the weekend that left at least two dogs dead from gunshot wounds. The San Antonio Police Department is conducting investigations into the shootings, which occurred on the city's North Side, as reported by San Antonio Current and MySA.
According to San Antonio resident Joshua Valdez, who shared his experience on social media, both his and another dog, a husky, were shot and killed by someone in a moving vehicle on Saturday night. Valdez's post contained a harrowing message, "If y'all stay in North Central, there's a guy going around shooting dogs," he wrote, "He shot this husky last night and my dog as well. Be on the look out for this car, we needa catch this sick mf," according to the San Antonio Current. Subsequently, a neighbor's surveillance footage captured one of the incidents, showing a dark-colored Nissan Rogue slowing down before discharging two shots and the husky on the sidewalk collapsing.
While social media influencers and self-proclaimed animal advocates, such as Paul Mueller and internet sleuth @TizzyEnt, have suggested that the number of animals shot may be higher, with claims of up to four dogs being victimized, SAPD Public Information Officer Nicholas Soliz has clarified that only two shootings have been officially confirmed. Officer Soliz told San Antonio Current that "the department is only investigating two confirmed shootings."
Community concern is growing, as evidenced by a public statement posted on Instagram by District 1 City Councilwoman Sukh Kaur on Monday. "We are deeply concerned about recent reports of pets being shot in our district," Kaur stated, "If you see something, say something, please don’t hesitate to contact SAPD immediately," as reported by MySA. Police have not yet determined if the two shootings, which took place within an hour of each other, are related or if there may be a broader threat to the community and its pets.
