The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is reaching out to the public for suggestions on how to repurpose more than a dozen school buildings left empty by their recent "right-sizing" plan. The plan, which involved closing several campuses, now leaves the district with the challenge of finding new uses for these vacant structures.
As part of the process, the district is enlisting the help of a consulting group, funded by a grant from the National Association of Realtors, as reported by News 4 San Antonio. The group's role will be to propose potential avenues for the reuse of the buildings, which could range from new educational purposes to leasing opportunities for other organizations. Options being considered are diverse, reflecting the needs and possibilities of the local communities these schools once served.
Moreover, SAISD is seeking more granular input from community stakeholders. "SAISD closed over a dozen schools as part of their rightsizing plan," as noted by FOX San Antonio. The district understands the significant role these buildings have played in the community and is assuring residents that, in the meantime, the vacant buildings are being kept secure.
Community engagement doesn't stop online or in consultative circles, as there are six more meetings planned to collect public commentary. The next meeting will take place next Tuesday at Edison High School at 6 p.m., offering a platform for residents to have their voices heard and ideas considered.
