A tragic confluence of events late Monday night in Clairemont Mesa resulted in the death of Officer Austin Machitar, 30, and critical injuries to his partner, Officer Zach Martinez, 27. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, 16-year-old Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, driving without a license, was also killed at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol is now looking to unravel the particulars that led to this deadly collision. The San Diego Police Department revealed in a statement acquired by Hoodline that the officers were amid a late-night pursuit, which ended when their vehicle was struck by the teen's car at an intersection.
Officer Machitar, who had been serving since 2019, had a noted history as a Field Training Officer and a passion for recruiting within the force. His partner, Officer Martinez, is grappling with serious injuries and undergoing multiple surgeries, as his father Ernest revealed in a phone interview, as per ABC 10 News. Martinez has had a versatile career, having served in the Navy and as an Emergency Medical Technician before joining the police department.
The revelation that the teenage driver did not hold a license has cast a complicated light on an already grievous situation. His passing, caused by blunt head and neck trauma, abruptly terminated what family members described as a life entwined in familial bonds. "He was always looking for family. He would always text my sister and I and from what I know other family members. He was always trying to keep in touch," Michelle Uriostegui said, per ABC 10 News.
