The city of San Diego is in mourning following the death of a San Diego Police Officer during a late-night vehicle pursuit. In an unfortunate turn of events, Officer Austin Machitar was killed, and his colleague, Officer Zach Martinez, was critically injured when their patrol car collided near the 5200 block of Clairemont Mesa Blvd., as per a statement issued by the San Diego Police Department.
Officer Machitar, aged 30, had been with the San Diego Police Department since 2019 and was remembered for his service as a Field Training Officer and his enthusiasm for recruiting new officers. Officer Zach Martinez, the 27-year-old who sustained critical injuries, was formerly trained by Machitar and frequently accompanied him on patrol shifts. The suspect involved in the police chase died at the scene.
The San Diego Police Department has requested the California Highway Patrol conduct an independent investigation to determine the cause of the collision. As the department grapples with this heavy loss, they have extended gratitude towards the community and fellow law enforcement agencies for their support during this challenging time.
Families and individuals who wish to assist the officers or extend their support may find relevant information on sdpoa.org. Officer Martinez remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The police say the investigation into the collision is ongoing, with updates to be provided as they become available.
