San Diego residents commuting along College Grove Drive may need to account for possible delays over the next few weeks following the appearance of a large crack in the Chollas Operations Yard parking lot. According to the City of San Diego, the employee parking lot was evacuated as a cautionary measure due to the yard's location above the closed Chollas Landfill. On Wednesday, the site continues to be off-limits while assessments and repairs occur.

“The Chollas Operations Yard site sits atop a closed landfill, requiring ongoing maintenance and monitoring to address the natural settling, which is standard for closed landfill sites,” James Hay, Deputy Director of the Environmental Services Department (ESD), said, as per the City of San Diego. He added that swift action was taken to ensure proper controls were in play, reaffirming their vigilance in health and safety compliance. Despite the disruption, this natural occurrence has prompted a revised employee parking plan, shifting spaces to College Grove Drive and affecting traffic patterns, including the bike lane and one northbound travel lane.

As crews work to resolve the issue at the Chollas Operations Yard, the temporary parking shortage has necessitated using nearby Chollas Lake parking lots and portions of College Grove Drive to accommodate the approximately 1,000 employees affected by the lot's closure. This reallocation of parking has brought about traffic modifications that city officials are monitoring closely.
