A San Jose Police Department officer has been charged with multiple counts, including felony domestic violence, after allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and discharging his firearm within his home. Officer Timothy Hackney, 31, faces accusations of false imprisonment, assaults, and using his duty weapon during a domestic dispute, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Reports detail alarming episodes where Hackney is alleged to have thrown his girlfriend into a bedroom and prevented her from leaving, and during one such instance, he covered her mouth to mute her screams and slapped away her phone when she attempted to call 911, these actions are part of a series of violent encounters stretching over a year. Hackney was arraigned at the South County Courthouse in Morgan Hill, where he was released with conditions, facing possible incarceration if convicted.
District Attorney Jeff Rosen underscored the gravity of the allegations, stating, as per the District Attorney's Office, “Domestic violence is a terrible, destructive crime and all perpetrators must be held accountable – badge or no badge.” The pattern of abuse seemingly began more than a year ago and persisted into 2024. On June 7, Hackney is accused of forcefully carrying the victim to their bedroom to isolate her from escape, suffocating her cries for help with his hand, and tossing her phone away to block communication to emergency services.
In a prior incident during a trip last year, Hackney reportedly slapped the victim's phone out of her hand as she threatened to contact the police. However, she managed to escape to a nearby restaurant and used their phone to call law enforcement but disconnected before conversing with a dispatcher. The emergency call nonetheless left a traceable record. During another troubling confrontation more than a year ago, the officer is accused of firing a bullet through their home's ceiling. Afterward, he flippantly remarked to the victim, “I missed,” while their child was also in the residence, as cited by the District Attorney's Office.
Following the charges, Hackney has been served with a Gun Violence Restraining Order and is currently on administrative leave as the legal proceedings unfold.
