Today, San José's downtown gained a new pulse as six fresh small businesses opened their doors on Post Street through the city's continued efforts to revitalize the area via its MOMENT pop-up retail program. These storefronts at 21 and 23 Post Street, which had been collecting dust for over two years, are now home to an array of local creatives ranging from fine art and stationery to plushies and home goods with a focus on LGBTQIA+ ownership, something Mayor Matt Mahan says is driving the downtown rebound and "creating opportunities for new entrepreneurs to experiment and grow", as per the City of San José.
The ribbon-cutting event was a collaborative affair with the San José Downtown Association and the innovative MOMENT initiative, which appears to be a breeding ground for unconventional retail experiences that pander to the niche and the necessity. The venues, including the whimsically named 'Cub n‘ Cony' and 'Tiny Keyboard Shop,' promise to provide merchandise and a slice of the local artscape. Mahan's Instagram post echoed this sentiment: unveiling these once-vacant storefronts will usher in "fresh, new experiences that are driving our Downtown rebound."
The city's financial commitment to these ventures is carried by the optimistic notion that a city with a breathing, living downtown culture can entice both consumer and entrepreneurial interests. Alex Stettinski, CEO of the San Jose Downtown Association, emphasized the transformation of these long-neglected spaces into a dynamic hub for retail, with "an exciting cluster of retail vibrancy featuring six creative small businesses," nearly all helmed by queer women of color, further coloring the economic and cultural fabric of the community, as cited by the City of San José.
