Texas road-trippers will soon be able to pit stop at one of the largest Buc-ee's travel centers in Central Texas. Located in San Marcos, the project's launch was confirmed by an August filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). This new Buc-ee's, only 25 miles down the road from its supersized counterpart in Luling, is scheduled to break ground in October and is expected to be operational by the tail end of 2025.
San Marcos City Council, by putting pen to paper on an incentive program in March, has notably sweetened the pot for the behemoth travel center. With a projected budget of nearly $47.2 million, the new Buc-ee's at 3245 North Interstate 35 will span 74,707 square feet and is slated to feature 120 fuel stations. The location will also cater to the burgeoning demand for electric vehicles with its capability for more than 100 charging stations, according to KXAN.
Looking at the broader economic effects, the travel center is poised to create a sustained stream of tax revenue for local government and education over the next 15 years. With Buc-ee's agreeing to a 50% sales tax rebate deal, the San Marcos and Hays County area anticipates nearly $6 million in property taxes and over $3 million in sales taxes, KVUE reports. Furthermore, the Hays Consolidated Independent School District stands to benefit from a contributed sum totaling more than $11 million.
The ethos behind Buc-ee's expansion appears to be more than just the provision of fuel and snacks. The mammoth travel centers promise to bolster local economies by leading ample job creation initiatives, with a workforce anticipated to establish as many jobs ranging up to 100 to 175. Green vehicle enthusiasts and motorists looking for traditional fuel stops alike are expected to find solace in this planned oasis of road travel convenience nestling in the heart of Central Texas.
