The judicial wheels are in motion this week for Alexander Castro, the man facing manslaughter charges for a fatal crash that occurred on Highway 281 back in July 2022. Castro is accused of drunkenly barreling down the road at a speed of 91 miles per hour, resulting in the tragic death of 24-year-old Alexandra Seybert, as KSAT reported.
In a courtroom overseen by Judge Stephanie Boyd, prosecutor Daniel Escobar opened with assertions that Castro was operating his vehicle well over the posted speed limit without braking prior to the collision, as per details obtained by Express News; the defense, however, points the finger at inadequate police response for the tragic outcome, indicating an earlier crash led to traffic congestion officers failed to manage effectively, arguing they did not implement sufficient measures to alleviate or warn of the traffic buildup.
With Castro's trial unfolding in the 187th District Court, evidence includes testimony from SAPD officer Jeremy Morgan, who arrived at the initial crash site and was still handling the aftermath when the deadly second collision ensued, according to statements in Express News. Body cam footage presented during the trial documented an interaction between Morgan and Castro immediately following the incident, where Castro claimed he couldn't stop as "everyone hit their breaks."
The defense contends that the chaotic aftermath of a wrong-way driver related collision was not properly managed by SAPD, implying the congested backdrop set the stage for Seybert's death and Castro’s involvement, "They put out no flares. They didn’t put police vehicles in the way. They didn’t call one of their buddies on the radio and say ‘Hey man can you go and protect the scene’," defense attorney Gary Hillier told the jury, as reported by Express News.
