Early this morning, in what can only be described as a startling incident for parents and students alike, an East Central Independent School District school bus collided with an 18-wheeler in southeastern Bexar County. The accident involved East Central ISD Bus #266, which was reported to have occurred near Loop 1604 and Highway 87 at approximately 7:30 a.m. According to officials, the bus was en route to East Central High School and Heritage Middle School with about 30 individuals on board.
While the crash sent a ripple of distress through the community, it was confirmed by the school district that there were no severe injuries among the students. According to a KENS 5 report, some minor injuries sustained in the collision included bloody noses and cuts. Students who requested further medical evaluation were taken to local hospitals as a precautionary measure.
Amid the chaos of the accident, one middle school student, Stetson Whittenberg, recalled the frightening moment to KENS 5: "A trailer was pulling out from the highway and our bus hit it and all the windows shattered on the sides." In the wake of the event, emergency services promptly attended to the scene, assisting in the evacuation and care of those affected. Expressing their concern and the urgency of the moment, East Central ISD's spokesperson, Brandon Oliver, remarked, "Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students." These sentiments were echoed in a statement obtained by the Express-News.
Adding to the distress of parents, Stetson's father, Garrett Tope, described to KENS 5 the tumultuous rush to the site: "We live less than a mile from the accident, so the traffic already built up." In an eagerness to reach their children, parents grappled with the traffic snarl, while Samantha Tope was escorted to the scene as she was a parent. The incident, as reported, did cause a delay on U.S. 87, thus affecting the morning commute for many motorists.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office is leading the ongoing investigation into how the bus ended up rear-ending the big rig, as initially reported by the East Central ISD spokesman. Updates on the situation are to be provided by the school district as more details become available. As the community recovers from this event, the focus remains steadily on the well-being of the students and the effort to prevent similar incidents in the future.
