Travelers at SEA Airport faced significant delays Sunday as a result of a cyberattack that compromised the airport's systems. According to KING5, airport staff first noticed unauthorized activity on Saturday morning and later identified the problem as a cyberattack the following afternoon. Crowds wound through the terminals, where digital screens were dark, and staff resorted to manual processes to manage flight operations.
This latest security breach underlines the vulnerability of critical transport hubs to such attacks. Michael Morgenstern, partner with DayBlink Consulting, remarked on the escalating threats to essential infrastructure, citing recent significant attacks on major ports and airports around the globe. "Two different attacker populations are responsible: criminal enterprises and nation-states," Morgenstern explained in a report by GeekWire. Additionally, cyberattacks at U.S. airports in October 2022 showcased the danger these venues face from those seeking to exploit the rich data environments they offer.
Compounding the intensity of the incident, this cyberattack follows closely on the heels of a broad IT outage in July that resulted in sweeping disruptions. The outage was traced back to a flawed update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which, as per TechMonitor, inadvertently affected some 8.5 million Windows devices worldwide.
