A seasoned lawbreaker with a long rap sheet has been nabbed once again, this time for a cunning retail fraud that siphoned over $4,500 from Lowe's stores around Hillsborough County and Clearwater; this, according to a press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Mark Brents, 57, a man who has known the inside of a prison cell on eleven occasions and has found his name etched into the booking logs of Orient Road Jail 74 times since 1985, stands accused of a barcode swapping scam.
The Sheriff's Office's dedicated Organized Retail Theft Unit (ORT) was tipped off to Brents's swindling scheme that involved him cleverly swapping out barcodes on goods to fool the store's pricing system, netting him pricier merchandise at a fraction of the cost and investigators unraveling his scam stumbled over online adverts peddling what appeared to be the lifted items, The announcement also exposed a scheme similar to those of old-time bandits, though manifested in the barcode era. The capture of Mr. Brents on August 21 was a joint effort, with Clearwater Police Department lending their resources for what turned out to be a successful sting operation.
Brents, driving a black Nissan Altima with mismatched tags, was observed for his erratic driving. Although this was a minor issue compared to his larger crimes, whereupon he found himself in cuffs once more.
Sheriff Chad Chronister articulated the importance of this arrest and alliance, "Our Organized Retail Theft Unit, working hand-in-hand with the Clearwater Police Department, successfully apprehended a career criminal before he could victimize more businesses in our community, This partnership was crucial in stopping a thief who has been a repeated offender for decades and speaks volumes of the power of collaboration between law enforcement agencies," Chronister’s message emphasized about maintaining community safety and vigilance. "Despite this individual's lengthy criminal history, he still has not learned his lesson, We will not tolerate habitual offenders who continue to prey on our community," the sheriff concluded, as stated from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
