With the clock ticking down to the Democratic vice-presidential selection, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly's digital footprints have fueled fresh speculation in an already rife political environment. Following a quickly deleted social media post in which Kelly highlighted his dedication to serving Arizonans, political observers, and constituents were left pondering his potential as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.
Senator Kelly initially posted a message on his personal social media page, as reported by 12News: "My background is a bit different than most politicians. I spent my life serving in the Navy and at NASA, where the mission always comes first. Now, my mission is serving Arizonans." This post, however, vanished in less than an hour. Soon after, Kelly revisited the platform to say, "Whether it was from my time in the Navy and at NASA, serving in the United States Senate, or visiting our troops overseas: I've learned that when your country asks you to serve, you always answer the call."
The New York Post also captured this fleeting moment in the digital realm. They suggested Kelly's initial post could have been interpreted as him signaling a diminishing likelihood of being Harris’s choice for VP. The New York Post detailed the scrubbed message, where Kelly emphasized that, "Now my mission is serving Arizonans."
Political consultants have chimed in to downplay the situation, advising the public not to read too much into Kelly’s social media activity. "An Arizona senator tweeting about being an Arizona senator is not news. Go back to your Sundays everybody," Jacob Peters, a spokesperson for Kelly, mentioned in a follow-up post. Nonetheless, the social media courtesy by Senator Kelly has heightened anticipation of Vice President Harris’s looming decision, which is expected within the next 36 hours. Following the announcement, Harris and her chosen running mate will embark on a cross-country campaign tour, including a stop in Phoenix on Friday evening.
