A tragic accident in Lenawee County yesterday afternoon resulted in the death of a 76-year-old woman and left her 82-year-old husband with serious injuries. The couple, hailing from Tecumseh, were involved in a two-vehicle collision while navigating the intersection of West US-223 Highway and Humphrey Highway in Palmyra Township, as reported by The Detroit News.
According to FOX 2 Detroit, the couple's vehicle, a silver Ford Focus, was making a turn onto Humphrey Highway when it was struck by a maroon Ford Expedition driven by a 58-year-old Palmyra Township man. The impact occurred just before 3:40 p.m., with police and emergency services dispatching to the site shortly thereafter.
The wtol report detailed that both injured parties were swiftly transported to ProMedica Toledo hospital where the woman eventually succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Expedition sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene of the crash.
Early findings from the Michigan State Police indicate that neither alcohol nor excessive speed were contributing factors in the fatal crash. Furthermore, an ongoing investigation is being conducted and authorities are calling for anyone with information to step forward. They have directed the public to contact Trooper Jason Mead at (734) 242-3500 should they have any relevant details. Meanwhile, the incident necessitated the closure of a part of US-223 as troopers examined the scene.
The loss of the 76-year-old adds to Michigan's statistics of fatal accidents, which saw a minor decrease from 1,053 in 2022 to 1,021 last year, as reported by The Detroit News. This latest occurrence follows close on the heels of another fatal collision in Lenawee County's Tecumseh Township that claimed two lives last weekend.
