A Sevierville man has been sentenced to over 12 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to the receipt of child pornography, an official release stated. Ronnie Joe Maples, 47, faced the legal consequences of his actions in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Knoxville on August 21, where the Honorable Thomas A. Varlan handed down a sentence of 151 months imprisonment.
Following the completion of his sentence, Maples will undergo lifetime supervised release, with mandated registration as a sex offender in state registries and compliance with strict sex offender conditions, according to the Department of Justice. Maples was initially charged with one count of receipt of child pornography under 18 U.S.C. § 2252A(a)(2). Court documents highlighted that Maples, and another individual engaged in internet discussions about actively molesting children and producing child pornography, during which Maples received such illicit material.
In November 2022, an associate of Maples began cooperating with federal authorities, which led to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Secret Service (USSS) actively investigating the case. Evidence confirming the receipt of child pornography by Maples was discovered through a warranted search of his Facebook account and cellular phone. This investigation, spearheaded by the FBI and USSS, resulted in the subsequent charges and plea agreement with Maples.
The prosecution of the case was led by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Kolman. The case itself was a part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006, by the Department of Justice to address the increasing problem of child sexual exploitation and abuse. PSC combines efforts from various government levels to capture, and prosecute exploiters of children, and also focuses on assisting the victims of such crimes. U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of Tennessee, Francis M. Hamilton III, and FBI Special Agent in Charge, Joseph E. Carrico announced the sentence.
