A Silver Spring, Maryland man has entered a guilty plea for his role in the assault on law enforcement during the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Uliyahu Haya, 48, admitted to the felony charge in front of U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 17, 2025, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia.

Court records reveal that Haya traveled from Maryland to D.C. on the day of the attack and made his entrance into the Capitol building through the Senate Wing Door. His path took him from the Crypt to Statuary Hall and then to the Speaker of the House Lobby. A physical altercation erupted around 2:55 p.m. when Metropolitan Police Department officers were pushing out rioters through the Upper House Doorsm as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia. It was then that Haya stepped in and pushed an MPD officer back several feet.

The FBI arrested Haya on Aug. 26, 2021, in Fairfax, Virginia. The investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol breach has been a collaborative effort with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division's Counterterrorism Section leading the prosecution. The FBI's Baltimore and Washington Field Offices investigated while receiving additional support from the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

In the time since the Capitol siege, over 1,488 individuals have been charged nationwide for their involvement in the events of that day, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Columbia. This includes nearly 550 people facing charges of assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The Justice Department states that the investigation into the Jan. 6 breach continues to be an active and ongoing effort.
