The Skokie community is mourning the loss of 27-year-old Joseph James Center, who succumbed to injuries three weeks after a tragic bicycle accident. According to the Chicago Tribune, Center was cycling southbound on Gross Point Road when a vehicle traveling north collided with him at the intersection of Skokie Boulevard on July 24 at around 7:05 p.m.
As per the Chicago Tribune, despite initial reports by Skokie police suggesting Center's condition was critical but stable, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later declared his death an accident, revealing the cause to be blunt force injuries from the collision, his unfortunate passing on August 15 marks a somber trend in Niles Township, where traffic incidents have claimed the lives of two other bicyclists this summer and, in a separate occurrence, an 85-year-old pedestrian was also fatally struck.
The authorities, including local police and the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force Major Crash Assist Team, are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding these incidents. ABC 7 Chicago reports that the driver involved in Center's accident remained at the scene following the crash, yet there is no immediate information available on whether any charges or citations have been issued concerning the incident.
