A five-alarm brush fire that erupted in South Hillsboro has been contained and no longer poses a threat to the community, authorities said. The blaze, which occurred on the 28500 block of Southwest Laurel Road, was met with a swift response from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews shortly after 3 p.m. this past Sunday. According to KOIN, road closures were put in effect at Southwest Laurel Road at the intersections with Southwest Campbell Road and Southwest McCormick Hill Road while the firefighting efforts were underway.
Local resident Gunnar Ochoa was one of the community members who quickly jumped in to lend a hand, offering support to neighbors to protect homes and property. "It’s pretty scary, it’s just how stuff works though. There’s nothing I can do about it, I was knocking on doors asking if people needed their dogs taken out or needed stuff moved. All you can do is help," Ochoa told KPTV. Fire crews managed to fully contain the fire by shortly after 5 p.m., with no reported injuries and no loss of buildings.
Officials were quick to highlight the importance of the community's and firefighters' rapid response to the fire. Sam Khieu, a spokesperson for TVF&R, indicated that quick actions significantly reduced potential damage. "The temperature, little bit of breeze, the humidity or all the dryness, have all contributed to the fast-moving pace of this fire," Khieu explained. The fire crews then dedicated several hours to extinguishing hotspots and investigating the cause of the fire, which has yet to be officially determined.
As the containment efforts proved successful, the community was reminded to remain vigilant amid continuing hot, dry conditions that could easily precipitate similar incidents. Fire officials urge residents to stay cautious, reinforcing that the collective watchfulness and readiness to act can make all the difference in emergency situations, as was the case in South Hillsboro. The collaboration between fire crews and residents showcased how a combined effort can quickly manage a potentially dangerous and rapidly evolving situation.
