A fire that broke out yesterday in Southeast Portland has claimed the life of a man, as confirmed by local fire officials. The incident, which occurred on SE Flavel Street, was initially reported just before 3:30 a.m. KOIN reported that firefighters, upon arrival, were faced with an intense situation with the fire threatening to quickly to spread, prompting an upgrade to a second alarm. Crews managed to control the flames and proceeded to comb through the dwelling, encountering a male victim inside.
Firefighters immediately began attempting to resuscitate the man, however, despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the site of the inferno. FOX 12 identified the victim as a 40-year-old man, though his name remains withheld pending notification of kin. Reports indicate that no other individuals were present in the home during the time of the fire.
The circumstances surrounding the blaze were further complicated due to the condition inside the home. Referred to as a "hoarder" house by KATU, the packed conditions may have presented additional hazards to the firefighters navigating the premises during the search and rescue operations. All active firefighting crews were recalled after the situation was brought under control, with a single engine left to handle any further tasks. Fire investigators have since been on the scene to unravel the origin and cause of the fire.
Details are sparse as the investigation continues, but officials are expected to provide more information as it becomes available.
