The streets of Springfield witnessed a grim episode over the weekend, leading to the Springfield Police Department's swift action to bring the alleged perpetrator to justice. On August 11, a man fell victim to a fatal stabbing, and after meticulous investigation, 30-year-old Luis Rodriguez-Cruz has been charged with murder among other offenses, according to details released by the Springfield Police Department.
The incident that set the investigation in motion transpired in the early hours of Sunday when officers were called to State & Terrence Streets upon receiving reports of a stabbing victim laid in the road, having encountered their final distress shortly before. The wounded man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Baystate Medical Center where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A crime scene was later localized to an apartment building on the 600 block of State Street. Under the direction of Captain Trent Duda, the Springfield Police Homicide Unit initiated the investigation that would pinpoint Rodriguez-Cruz as a suspect.
Rodriguez-Cruz's encounter with the law didn't end there. Holding an active default warrant for drug charges, he was located on Monday by the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) while in a car near Worthington Street and Armory Street. After stopping in a parking lot on the 2200 block of Main Street and exiting the car, Rodriguez-Cruz was approached by detectives and arrested on the warrant. The detectives managed to recover a loaded firearm from the waistband of Rodriguez-Cruz during his arrest, as well as substances identified as cocaine and crack cocaine.
His arraignment is slated for a hearing in Springfield District Court on Wednesday. Rodriguez-Cruz faces a roster of charges including carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a Class B drug, and the outstanding default warrant.
