On a regular Monday evening in Springfield, an incident escalated beyond a mere traffic accident. According to Springfield Police Department's report, officers arrested 54-year-old Charles Hayes after he collided with a parked car. The crash, which occurred around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Fountain Street and Woodlawn Street, brought more than just traffic disruptions.
As police responded to the accident, a witness had already taken a loaded firearm from Hayes' vehicle, arguably preventing a further deterioration of events. The narrative took a turn when authorities learned that the vehicle was not just involved in a crash—it was uninsured and not properly registered, and the driver, Hayes, possessed a history marked by previous felony charges. Following medical attention at the scene, Hayes was taken under custody and, after being treated at Baystate, was brought to Springfield Police Headquarters for the booking process.
Holding no license for the loaded firearm found, nor an FID card, Hayes now faces a slate of charges. These include "Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License," "Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card," "Firearm Violation with 3 Prior Violent/Drug Crimes," "Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm," "Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Registration," and "Uninsured Motor Vehicle," all of which adds significant weight to his legal woes, as reported by Springfield Police Department.
