A Florida family's visit to the Houston Zoo took an unexpected turn when their belongings, valued at $15,000, were stolen from their rented Tesla. However, in a twist of fate, the items, including high-end handbags and cash, were returned to them, the Houston Police Department confirmed. The theft which unfolded on Sunday was distressing enough to ruin the family's outing, but the resolution arrived promptly yesterday, relieving the family of their loss.
According to an interview given to The Houston Chronicle, someone reached out to the family via social media claiming to know the individual responsible for the theft, offering to return the stolen goods. The family subsequently managed to recover their possessions without needing to press charges, deciding to quickly close this unfortunate chapter of their trip. The vehicle showed no signs of forced entry, and according to the 6abc report, the family leveraged the car's surveillance system to aid the police with the investigation.
Houston Police Department spokesman Victor Senties stated, "My understanding is this person; we don’t know who if it’s actually the same person who took the property but someone did reach out to them via social media and stated that they knew who the individual was and that they wanted to return the property." The items were subsequently returned to the hotel where the family had been staying, according to Senties. HPD's Auto Theft Division is currently investigating to determine if this burglary has any connection to other incidents in the area.
The theft not only put the family's travels in disarray but it also momentarily stripped them of material memories. "There's about $15,000 worth of stuff wrapped up into it that he took," one of the victims expressed in a statement obtained by 6abc. Thankfully, the family won't have to replace their valuables, except for the clothes and personal items they purchased to get by after the incident. While the thief smartly discarded items with tracking devices, he could not evade the eye of the Tesla's vigilant cameras, captured walking away with the bags and now part of the ongoing felony investigation.
