
A high school student at Power Center Academy Hickory Hill High School in Memphis was detained after being found with a handgun on campus early this morning. According to WREG, the incident occurred just after 8 a.m., with Memphis Police responding to a call about a gun at the charter school.
FOX13 Memphis reported that the student, who had the gun in his possession, was quickly detained by officers. The school, which serves grades 9 through 12, had begun its school day less than an hour earlier, at 7:30 a.m. This comes barely a week into the new school year, which began last Thursday.
No information has been released about the intention of the student with the handgun or about any potential charges. The school has yet to respond to the incident publicly.
The discovery of the weapon in the student's backpack was first reported by Action News 5, which indicated the student is 17 years old. The circumstances that led the student to bring the gun into the school premises remain under investigation. Currently, authorities have not provided additional details about the student or the ongoing investigation.
