Over 50 kids from North and South Kohala gathered to put their angling skills to the test at the HI-PAL South Kohala Keiki Fishing Derby this past Saturday, much to the delight of local families and an engaged police force. Held at the pristine Pua Ka 'Ilima 'O Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park, also known as "LST", the event was a blend of community engagement and sunny outdoor fun. As reported by Nixle, local authorities including the Hawai‘i Police Department's South Kohala Community Policing Section, alongside state aquatic experts, were on hand to not just contribute fishing know-how but also weigh the day's catches.

Emphasizing the importance of positive interactions between youth and law enforcement, South Kohala District Commander Captain Roy Valera told Nixle, "The weather could not have been any better and more importantly, the kids had fun while interacting with police officers in a positive and meaningful way," illuminating the dual impact of such community events. It wasn't just about the fish, with flat seas and cool breezes setting the scene, interactive education, and a spirit of camaraderie ultimately stole the show despite the competition and prizes.

The competition was segmented into three age brackets with awards for first, second, and third place, ensuring that accomplishments were celebrated at various levels of youthful expertise. The derby also rewarded the heaviest fish and the most fish caught, with two additional grand prizes spurring on the competitive spirit among the participants. These awards came at the end of an ocean-sprayed day when lucky numbers prizes were distributed, adding another layer of excitement for the young anglers.

Acknowledgement was also given to the supporters that made the event possible, Captain Valera extending gratitude to all the local businesses and sponsors whose contributions were foundational to the derby's success. The South Kohala Community Policing Section took the opportunity to thank the partners involved publicly, highlighting the tapestry of goodwill and collaboration it takes to foster childhood education and community bonds.
