Midtown Atlanta has become the scene of a grisly crime following a series of car break-ins. A man, suspected in the thefts, was found shot in the head early yesterday morning. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that the victim was discovered behind the wheel of a gray Jeep on Bishop Street before 3 a.m.
Local authorities, working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting, have identified two burglarized vehicles near the site where the man was found. In an unfortunate twist, Officers found him unconscious but breathing after the shooting, and he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, struggling to survive his grave wounds. The Atlanta Police Department expressed in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, "It appears an unknown suspect shot multiple times at the victim, striking him as a result."
The criminal investigation has expanded to include the findings of similar car burglaries on the 3300 block of Peachtree Road in Buckhead, which they believe might be connected to the wounded man. As reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the same man is suspected of committing multiple car break-ins in the area earlier that day.
Following the lead to the northwest Atlanta apartment complex known as the Mark at West Midtown, investigators discovered more evidence of break-ins. While evidence suggests the man was shot by an unknown assailant, located at the scene were shell casings indicating the suspect fired multiple shots, hitting the victim at least once. The case, which was initially investigated as an aggravated assault by Atlanta police, is now considered a homicide after the victim succumbed to his injuries, as the man died from his wounds in the hospital.
The Atlanta Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made in the case, and it remains unclear if any charges have been filed in connection to the shooting.
