A Hillsborough County man has been handed a prison sentence for crimes involving child sexual abuse material. Darnell Credit, 51, of Tampa, will serve six years and six months in federal prison as decreed by U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber. After his release, Credit will be under a supervised life release, as reported on August 13th by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The charges against Credit stemmed from an FBI raid on his home in November 2021, which resulted in the seizure of various electronic devices. Forensic analysis found over 1,000 photos and more than 100 videos depicting child sexual abuse, some content exhibiting sadistic acts, involving toddlers, and bestiality. The court also ordered a forfeiture of one computer, two thumb drives, and an external hard drive used in the commission of these crimes, as well as an restitution amounting to $21,000. Credit had entered a guilty plea earlier this February.
This sentencing marks another stride in the fight against child exploitation under Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative operational since May 2006. The program pools together efforts from federal to local entities to address this heinous crime wave. More information about Project Safe Childhood can be obtained on the Department of Justice's website. On the ground, the FBI took the lead in investigating the case, with help from the Tampa Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Abigail K. King and Ross Roberts handled prosecution duties.
Project Safe Childhood continues to be a crucial mechanism in the identification and rescue of victims, and in ensuring individuals who sexually exploit children are captured and duly prosecuted. The collaboration across federal, state, and local authorities has been pivotal, particularly when cases like Darnell Credit's come to light—atrocities hidden behind closed doors, within hard drives, appearing like specters in the machine that are too often overlooked.
