In a move signaling the city's commitment to tackling the affordable housing crisis, the City of Tampa has joined forces with Blue Sky Communities to open The Adderley, a new apartment complex offering affordable homes to the local community. As reported by the City of Tampa, this development introduces 128 units on the corner of Nebraska Avenue and Busch Boulevard.
With a $2 million investment from the City of Tampa, The Adderley will serve as a bridge between the Sulphur Springs neighborhood and Uptown District, providing essential housing for lower-income residents. Built for interviewing prospective tenants, the complex aimed at residents earning 80% or below the area median income. “The need for affordable housing in this area of Sulfur Springs and Uptown is enormous,” Kayon Henderson, Housing and Community Development Director, told the City of Tampa. “It is our hope that our partnership with Blue Sky Communities will inspire further reimagining along Nebraska Avenue,” as stated by the City of Tampa.
The initiative took root in response to the City of Tampa's 2021 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program, a government effort to encourage private sector engagement in the provision of affordable housing through federal tax credits. These incentives have culminated in the assigning of all 128 units of The Adderley as affordable accommodations.
Criteria for The Adderley residency entail applicants must not exceed earning more than 80% of the area median income, with the goal of prioritizing those in dire need for affordable housing. Having begun the interviewing process for potential residents, Tampa's affordable housing agenda appears firmly on track. A chart detailing the starting rental rates based on unit size and the applicant's income level, relative to the Area Median Income (AMI), can be found on the announcement by the City of Tampa's website.
