A 50-year-old Tampa man is facing a third-degree felony child abuse charge after authorities say he rammed his golf cart into a 15-year-old boy, dragged him by the collar and struck him repeatedly in the head and face during a dispute over slow play at a Palm Harbor golf course on Saturday.
Rhett Andrae Drummond and the teenager had argued about the pace of the teen's play at Lansbrook Golf Club, with both sides being disrespectful toward each other, according to the arrest affidavit as reported by WFLA. The confrontation escalated after the two briefly separated, with Drummond allegedly ramming his golf cart into the teen's cart before grabbing him off it by the shirt collar, per arrest affidavit details reported by WTSP.
The teen tried to drive away from Drummond, according to a statement he gave to police, but the affidavit states Drummond approached him again, threw him to the ground, and hit him multiple times in the head and face. Responding officers documented that the boy had a bloody nose and red marks around his neck at the scene, per WFLA's account. Drummond reportedly admitted his involvement in the altercation to investigators, per the arrest affidavit.
Victim and Mother Requested Charges
Both the 15-year-old and his mother formally asked law enforcement to press criminal charges against Drummond following the incident, the station's report notes.
