Tempe's culinary scene experiences a shake-up as Illegal Pete's, the Colorado-based burrito joint that made its home on Mill Avenue for almost six years, has shuttered its doors, with its signature burritos and nachos making their last appearance on August 19, 2024. The fast-casual Mexican restaurant, known for its lively atmosphere and a full bar featuring local craft beers, has been a go-to spot for Arizona State University students and residents alike, but its closure comes just days before the start of ASU's fall semester, leaving students to find alternative dining spots.
The abrupt discontinuation of service was announced through a notice on the restaurant's door, although specifics about the reason for the shutdown have not been disclosed—leaving regulars and newcomers alike in the lurch, and this naturally has fueled speculation and disappointment among those who frequented the establishment for their fix of quesadillas, salads, and a variety of snacks, particularly during the bustling school year when its proximity to campus was a major draw for the college crowd.
In a heartfelt farewell, Illegal Pete's extended their gratitude to their patrons and staff for their support and memories, stating, "It has been our privilege to be a part of your lives and to have shared in your celebrations, gatherings, and everyday moments," as reported by Phoenix New Times. Eager to keep their brand alive in the hearts of their Arizona fans, the owners suggested that Pete's loyalists could visit their remaining locations, including one near the University of Arizona campus in Tucson and a cluster of 14 spots in Colorado.
