In an act of radical generosity, the Altar Fellowship Church in Tennessee has taken a substantial step in alleviating the financial burden of medical debt for thousands of its community members. Aided by a national program, the church managed to raise about $50,000 in a single day, which translated into paying off approximately $8 million in medical debt for 3,921 families spread across seven counties in the region.
According to WKRN, the initiative was inspired by a personal experience of Senior Pastor Mattie Montgomery, who, after losing his father to cancer at a young age, witnessed an act of kindness when a local businessman provided Christmas gifts for his family. Moved by this last act of compassion, Pastor Montgomery envisioned a similar outreach beyond the confines of the church's walls. David Morrison, The Altar Fellowship Missions Pastor, stated, "We are called to be the light and the hope outside of these four walls and bless our community."
Adding a touch of serendipity to the story, one of the benefitted congregation members, Carl Smith, learned that the church had paid off his father's medical bills only after contributing to the cause. "My dad had some medical bills that we were just struggling to pay off," Smith said, as per WJHL, "And he came to my room and was like, hey, the Altar. Your church paid off my medical debt. And it was just such a blessing to find that out because it’s always good to have that off your shoulders."
The act of giving, rooted in spiritual credence, also strikes a chord with a larger narrative, challenging the stark realities of healthcare expenses in America. "Jesus said in Matthew Ten, he said freely, 'you have received so freely give,'" Morrison reiterated, as per WKRN.
