As the Labor Day weekend approaches, the stakes are high on Texas roads with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and local law enforcement agencies ramping up efforts to curb drunk driving. In a recent initiative, TxDOT launched the campaign "Drive Sober. No Regrets." to aggressively bring down the harrowing statistics from last year's holiday period. According to TxDOT, there were 334 DUI-alcohol related traffic crashes during last year's Labor Day holiday, resulting in 14 fatalities and 35 serious injuries.
"Every drunk driving fatality is preventable, plain and simple," Marc Williams, TxDOT Executive Director, stated as he stressed the urgency of the situation. Williams encouraged those celebrating the upcoming holiday to arrange a sober ride in advance. Law enforcement's increased presence begins on Aug. 16 and continues through Sept. 2, in line with the national heightened enforcement period sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as stated in the official release.
This surge in surveillance and intervention coincides with the sobering reality that has settled on the state since Nov. 7, 2000 – a date marking the last deathless day on Texas roadways. The "Drive Sober. No Regrets." initiative is a part of the larger #EndTheStreakTX campaign, which aims to mobilize the public through social media and other platforms to adopt safer driving habits.
In a statement obtained by TxDOT, "If you plan to celebrate Labor Day by drinking, make sure you arrange a sober ride using a rideshare, taxi, public transit or a designated driver," Williams advised. The sobering fact remains that Labor Day revelries can lead to irreversible tragedies when coupled with impaired driving. Texans who choose to disregard this advice may find themselves facing stringent legal consequences.
As part of their community outreach, TxDOT is coordinating with various law enforcement agencies to ensure drivers are cognizant of the heightened risks during this holiday period. They implore motorists to take the warnings seriously and always opt for safety. The reportable data collected from the Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report (CR-3) indicates the gravity of these incidents which TxDOT and the related agencies are fiercely aiming to curtail.
