For those navigating the Kahului area, be advised that the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is rolling out some roadway improvements along Kahului Beach Road this week. Commencing Tuesday, Aug. 20, through to Friday, Aug. 23, there'll be a partial road closure affecting the northbound direction. Hawai‘i Department of Transportation has stated that work will take place between the bright morning hours of 8 a.m. and the waning afternoon at 2:30 p.m. each day during this period.
The specifics, while traveling during the day, expect the makai shoulder and the right lane on Kahului Beach Road to be off-limits to traffic from Wahinepiʻo Avenue to Kanaloa Avenue. Irrespective of the closure, one lane will maintain its flow northbound. Drivers needing to turn left onto Wahinepiʻo Avenue can breathe easy as that pocket of access remains open. Hawai‘i Department of Transportation has deployed signs and cones to steer travelers clear from the workers and equipment busily improving the roadway, promising a smoother future transit. They urge drivers to exercise caution.
With the island’s perpetual embrace of nature and human infrastructure's tentative balance, these routine closures and improvement efforts are par for the course. They're part of the larger ongoing commitment by the State of Hawai‘i to maintain and better the thoroughfares that channel the lifeblood of traffic through its islands. For the most part, the scheduled improvements are expected not to cause significant disruptions, yet Hawai‘i Department of Transportation acknowledges the potential for minor inconveniences and thanks the public for their patience and cooperation in advance.
